Le galérien ou les terribles aventures de Paul Minus

an interactive fiction by Camille Brottes

10x5 min / 2001

Themes: Interactive fiction / Dramatic comedy / Absurd / Society’s fringes

Synopsis: Things haven’t gone right ever since you were born. It’s no use, whatever you do, you screw up! Even as a child in the school playground, things weren’t great. The others would steal your marbles and the girls refused to sit next to you. As you grew, the situation didn’t get any better. With your poor grades and lack of a family fortune, all you had was your physique. Unfortunately, that too let you down. You’ve remained short and skinny, in spite of your desperate efforts in the gym. The girls are still sitting far away from you. The years have passed slowly, too slowly without anything changing. With difficulty, you have found a pathetic job where you are treated like a slave. You’ve had a few affairs but the only girls you’re attracted to are, unfortunately, your friends’ girlfriends. No, you have to face the facts, you’re definitely jinxed. A loser if you prefer. That may sound a little more elegant but it’s just as pathetic.

However, you just can’t help it: you still have hope. There’s still a faint spark flickering away within you.

And what if you had the power to say stop and make a fresh start? What if a good fairy were to cast her spell over you all of a sudden?

After all, it’s never too late to believe in Father Christmas or God. It’s all up to you. You’re not yet thirty and, in theory, you have your whole life ahead of you.

You wish everything would switch round all of a sudden and start working properly for you. You dream for a second of being a super-hero to see what it feels like.

So, stay connected, you’re going to see: how to turn a jinxed life into a roaring success. In love, at work, in your family, in bed, with your friends, on holiday…

Scathing humour, uncompromising irony, deliberately grotesque characters, a coarse tone. This has to hurt and we ask for more!

This film explores the new frontiers of narration and the new grammar of the images for interactive programming (Internet, digital TV, cable and satellite).
